Back to School Safety: Starting the Year Safe As the school year kicks off, ensuring the safety of students is a top priority. Whether you're a parent, student, or community member, there are several key practices to help everyone stay safe. Watch Out for School Zones School zones are clearly marked for a reason. Slow down and pay attention to the reduced speed limits in these areas. Children can be unpredictable, and it's crucial to be extra vigilant when driving near schools. Be Alert Distractions can lead to accidents, especially in areas with high foot traffic like school zones. Keep your eyes on the road and be prepared for sudden stops or the unexpected actions of children. Put Your Phones Away One of the biggest distractions while driving is the use of mobile phones. Put your phone away to ensure you're fully focused on the road. Texts and calls can wait until you have safely reached your destination. Drop Off and Pick Up in Designated Areas ONLY Schools have specific areas for dropping off and picking up students to ensure the process is orderly and safe. Always use these designated zones to avoid unnecessary chaos and ensure the safety of all students. Consider Carpooling Carpooling is a great way to reduce the number of vehicles on the road during busy school hours. Fewer cars mean less congestion and a safer environment for students walking or biking to school. Stop for Buses Loading or Unloading Students School buses are equipped with stop signs and flashing lights for a reason. Always stop when you see a bus loading or unloading students. It's illegal and extremely dangerous to pass a stopped school bus. By following these simple but crucial guidelines, we can all contribute to a safer environment for students as they head back to school. Let's work together to ensure the school year starts on a safe note for everyone!
